Clay: What It Does to a Crewe Garden
Boulder clay holds water rather than releasing it. In a garden that shows up as standing water on the lawn, moss taking over from grass, patios that green up on the north side, fence posts rotting at ground level and planting that drowns over winter. It is fixed by decompaction, by graded topsoil at a real depth, by falls that take water somewhere deliberate, and by land drainage where the plot has nowhere else to send it. It is more expensive than another turf-over, and it is the last time you have to do it.

4. Groundworks and Drainage
Decompaction, formation levels, falls, land drainage and any soakaway or connection the plot needs. This is the stage that decides whether the garden works in February, and the only stage at which it can be done properly.

Walls, steps, patios, paths, edging, decking and fencing. Structural elements are built on foundations sized for the load with drainage designed in, not bedded on a scrape and pointed to look right.
6. Soft Landscaping and Handover

How much does landscaping a Crewe garden cost?
It depends far more on levels and spoil than on planting. As a guide, a small courtyard or terraced back garden typically runs from £3,500 to £8,000, a typical family garden refresh from £8,000 to £20,000, and a full redesign involving retaining walls, steps and drainage from £20,000 upwards. Why won't grass grow properly in my Crewe garden?
Nine times out of ten it is the ground rather than the seed or the turf. Most of Crewe sits on Cheshire Plain boulder clay, which is waterlogged from November to March and sets like concrete in July. Grass roots cannot cope with both. On the newer estates there is a second cause: the turf was laid on a thin skin of topsoil spread over compacted subsoil and building debris, so the roots hit a hard pan two inches down and stop. The fix is the same in both cases, which is decompaction and a proper depth of graded topsoil before anything is laid.
Can you do anything with a new-build garden in Basford or Wistaston?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do in CW2. A new-build garden is often handed over as levelled subsoil with a token layer of topsoil and turf over the top, sometimes with brick and mortar left in it. We strip it back, break up the compaction, remove the rubble properly under our licensed waste carrier registration, bring in graded topsoil to a real depth, and then build the garden. It costs more than a turf-over, and it is the difference between a lawn that works and one you replace in three years.
Do I need planning permission for a retaining wall in Crewe?
Generally not if it is under two metres, or under one metre where it fronts a highway. Height is only half the question though. A wall that retains soil is a structural job, not a decorative one: it needs a foundation sized for the load, drainage behind it and weep holes through it, otherwise water pressure will push it over regardless of how well the blockwork is laid.
