Why Aftercare Matters

Resin bound surfaces are remarkably low-maintenance compared to traditional paving options, but a little regular care goes a long way. Cheshire's varied weather, from frosty winters in the Welsh borders to warm summers, means your driveway experiences seasonal changes that benefit from periodic attention.

Following our recommended maintenance schedule will ensure your surface remains permeable, weed-free, and visually stunning throughout its 25+ year lifespan. Most importantly, proper aftercare maintains your warranty coverage.

Recommended Maintenance Schedule

We've developed this maintenance timetable based on our experience installing driveways across Crewe, Nantwich, Congleton, and throughout Cheshire. Adjust frequency based on your specific conditions, properties under heavy tree cover may need more frequent leaf clearing, for example.

Essential Cleaning Guidelines

Following these best practices will keep your resin bound surface in optimal condition whilst avoiding common mistakes that could cause damage.

Recommended Practices

  • Sweep regularly with a stiff outdoor broom
  • Pressure wash using maximum 150 bar setting
  • Maintain at least 200mm between lance and surface
  • Select a wide fan-pattern spray nozzle
  • Treat oil marks with washing up liquid
  • Always use cold water for cleaning
  • Act promptly on any spillages
  • Apply moss treatment during damp seasons

Practices to Avoid

  • Never apply hot water or steam cleaners
  • Avoid pressure settings exceeding 150 bar
  • Don't drag furniture or heavy items across
  • Never position skips directly on the surface
  • Avoid turning steering wheel whilst stationary
  • Don't use industrial solvents or chemicals
  • Never apply undiluted bleach to coloured aggregate
  • Prevent cement, plaster or mortar contact

Stain Removal Solutions

Different stains require specific treatment approaches. Here's our guide to tackling the most common marks your driveway may encounter.

Stain Type Removal Technique Products Required
Oil & Grease Apply undiluted washing up liquid directly to mark. Work in with stiff brush and leave for 10-15 minutes before rinsing. Standard washing up liquid, stiff brush, pressure washer
Chewing Gum Apply freezing spray to harden the gum completely, then carefully scrape away using plastic tool. Freeze spray, plastic scraper (not metal)
Moss & Algae Apply approved moss killer according to manufacturer instructions. Allow treatment time then rinse thoroughly. Algon or equivalent (avoid acid-based products)
Cement Splashes Contact us for professional removal, improper treatment can cause permanent damage. Professional treatment required
Tyre Marks Soak affected area with strong detergent solution, scrub with stiff brush, then pressure wash clean. Concentrated detergent, stiff brush, pressure washer
Leaf Tannins Test diluted bleach solution on hidden area first. If safe, apply to stain, leave briefly, then rinse. Diluted household bleach (test first)
Paint Spillage Act immediately, absorb wet paint with cloth. For dried paint, use appropriate remover for paint type. Absorbent cloths, resin-safe paint remover
⚠️ Important Reminder: Always test any cleaning product on a small, hidden area before treating visible sections. If you're uncertain about any stain removal procedure, contact our team for professional advice, it's better to ask than risk permanent damage.

Seasonal Care for Cheshire Weather

Cheshire experiences all four seasons distinctly, from frosty winters across the Cheshire Plain to warm summers in the county. Here's how to adapt your maintenance routine throughout the year.

Spring Refresh

  • Thorough post-winter deep clean
  • Inspect for any frost-related damage
  • Apply preventative weed treatment
  • Clear accumulated debris from edges
  • Check permeability is functioning

Summer Care

  • Regular sweeping to prevent dust build-up
  • Occasional hosing during dry spells
  • Clean BBQ grease splashes immediately
  • Monitor for UV-related changes
  • Keep plant pots on protective mats

Autumn Preparation

  • Daily leaf clearance during fall
  • Prevent tannin staining from wet leaves
  • Apply moss prevention treatment
  • Prepare drainage for winter rains
  • Final deep clean before winter

Winter Protection

  • Use rock salt for ice prevention
  • Rinse salt residue after thaw
  • Clear snow with plastic shovel
  • Avoid metal scrapers on surface
  • Monitor for freeze-thaw damage

Appropriate Usage Guidelines

Your resin bound driveway is engineered for standard residential use. Understanding what's appropriate helps prevent accidental damage.

Perfectly Suitable

  • Regular foot traffic and daily use
  • Standard cars, 4x4s and light vans
  • Parked vehicles (use stands under motorcycle kickstands)
  • Garden furniture with protective feet
  • Wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs
  • Bicycles with kickstand protection pads
  • Delivery trolleys and sack barrows

Not Recommended

  • Heavy goods vehicles or lorries
  • Skips without protective load-spreading boards
  • High point loads (stiletto heels, spike heels)
  • Dragging heavy objects across surface
  • Turning steering wheel whilst stationary
  • Building work without protective boarding
  • Storage of construction materials directly on surface

Power Steering Warning

⛔ CRITICAL – READ CAREFULLY: Never turn your steering wheel whilst your vehicle is completely stationary. This action, known as 'dry steering', causes power steering gouges: permanent lacerations created by the grinding, twisting action of tyres against the surface. These marks cannot be removed and are not covered by warranty. Always ensure your vehicle is moving, even very slowly, when turning the steering wheel.

Your Warranty Protection

Every resin bound installation from Cheshire Driveways & Landscaping includes comprehensive guarantee protection.

  • 15-Year Product Guarantee, coverage varies based on installation specification and intended usage
  • What's Covered: Manufacturing defects in materials, UV colour stability, structural integrity, permeability performance, aggregate colour fastness
  • Warranty Conditions: Regular maintenance following this guide must be documented
  • Exclusions: Damage resulting from misuse, chemical spillages, excessive impact, power steering gouges, or failure to maintain properly

We recommend keeping a simple log of your maintenance activities and retaining receipts for any professional cleaning services. This documentation supports any warranty claims should they arise.

Patch Repair Procedure

Should minor damage occur, localised repairs are possible without replacing the entire surface. Here's the professional approach we follow:

  1. Damage Assessment: Identify the affected area, extent of damage, and root cause
  2. Area Preparation: Carefully remove damaged material down to stable base layer
  3. Material Matching: Source identical aggregate blend with compatible UV-stable resin
  4. Application: Trowel fresh material level with surrounding surface
  5. Edge Blending: Feather edges carefully for seamless integration
  6. Curing Period: Allow 24-48 hours before any traffic
Professional Recommendation: For best results and warranty protection, we strongly advise using our professional repair service. DIY attempts may result in visible patches and could affect your guarantee coverage.
